In 1946, Doubleday produced a worthy competitor to Peterson’s original guide with Richard Pough’s Audubon Land Bird Guide, followed in 1951 with his Audubon Water Bird Guide. I wish I could tell you the number of photographs for each bird, but I can’t. More recently, however, an abundance of excellent bird photographers and the huge libraries of digital images now available have led to a new crop of bird books, with several high-quality, comprehensive photographic guides released in recent from the Stokes, National Wildlife Federation, and Princeton University Press. 2015 has seen the next step in this process, as regionally-focused guides become available that pair top-notch modern photographs with a more limited selection of birds for those of us who don’t need a full continent, 1000+ species guide.

The swallow is locally common and breeds on Grand Bahama, Abaco and Andros, less common on New Providence, and uncommon to non-existent in the central and southern Bahama Islands. As you should know by now, Audubon puts out some great field guides. The composite plate is not intended to try to create the illusion of a single photograph but rather is an effective way to associate bird with habitat.

Most pages are adorned with uniformly excellent photographs of warblers. Our guides are in the field every day. The new Peterson Guides are also very nice and have the same features but came out after I made my purchase. Stokes Field Guide to Birds: Eastern Region (Stokes Field Guides) This guide comes in both Eastern and Western varieties with the only differences being regional coverage. The colour plates usually illustrate adults of both sexes (unless the sexes are indistinguishable in the field), but distinctive seasonal or age differences in plumage are also illustrated.

During the nesting season, we often have long-continued rains which sometimes cause an enormous loss of life to insect-eating birds and their young. The best book to use in the field in Belgium is Birds of Europe by Killian Mullarney, Lars Svensson, Dan Zetterström, and Peter J. This classification lists all species recorded from the Australian mainland; Tasmania; island territories and surrounding waters. An excellent guide based on the National Geographic Birds of North America guide.

The photos, however, help make up for this iBird has been greatly improved since I first reviewed it, with added sounds along with new and improved illustrations. His guide attempts to give the reader a sense of what birders call "jizz," that ineffable quality of posture and kinesis whereby a bird can be recognized instantly, almost through feel, as if you'd grown up with it. The Reed guide was Peterson’s first field guide and must have inspired him to produce even a better field guide 28 years later.
